Rob Liefeld knows how to draw women perfectly. Especially ones that defy the laws of physics with their waists.

This neither titillates nor intimidates me.  Maybe they’re trying to defeat their foes through a mixture of disgust and pity?

My first exposure to “mainstream” comics when I was a kid was in the early 90’s and Liefeldian anatomy was in vogue. I wasn’t really good enough at drawing or really observing to recognize that is was so bad, let alone why it was so bad. I just knew it made me uncomfortable and even if I’d wanted to my mom would never have let me read a book with a cover like that.
Gee I wonder why I never really got into mainstream comics that much?
I’ve seen a lot of stuff like this going around. Talking about how they are not how real women are supposed to look…well duh. the target audience of a lot of main stream comics are well…hormonal teen-age boys to older men. MEN. they are gonna do what they think will bring in more Readers and big boobies and showing lots of legs is their way of doing it. No idea if it works or not, i really don’t care. I Dunno, just my thoughts on it.

But that’s kind of the point isn’t it? This sort of thing markets exclusively to hormonal men who only care about ass and tits, and, if this anatomy is any indication, have never actually seen a naked woman. That is an incredibly small demographic seeing as it purposely excludes all women and probably a large portion of men as well. Plus it’s entirely possible to make a character sexy without distorting them. Hell, a lot of people would find them sexier if they were less grotesque.
If it were limited to just porn or fetishy books I don’t think people would care so much, but it’s far more pervasive than that. So a lot of us who care about comics as a medium do care about this sort of thing quite a bit, and we have valid reasons.
Plus, you know, it’s kind of fun to make fun of really terrible art.

Me and my friends think there was one guy in mainstream comics who has ever seen a naked woman, and he drew a picture that all the others have been copying and recopying from since. It’s got a touch distorted over the years, naturally.

Oh, that’s hardly fair, there are mainstream comics artists that treat things fine.  Artists that know how to draw sexy without being exploitative or titillatory for no reason but to draw in readers.  A lot of them are horrible, yeah, but there are good ones, and saying things like that just means that the ones that are good don’t get any attention. :D
